The Quietest Revolution in Finance: DTCC Is Putting Wall Street's Back Office On-Chain
If you wanted to redesign the plumbing of US capital markets, you wouldn't start with a crypto exchange or a DeFi protocol. You'd start with the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, the institution almost nobody outside finance has heard of, which clears and settles the vast majority of US securities transactions and custodies tens of trillions of dollars in assets through its DTC subsidiary. So when DTCC commits to tokenizing the securities it custodies, that isn't another blockchain pilot press release. It's the market's core infrastructure changing under everyone's feet.
That's exactly what's happening this year, and the rail it's happening on is the Canton Network. Here's what's going on, why DTCC chose Canton, and what we think it means.
What DTCC is actually doing
The short version: DTCC is making DTC-custodied securities available as native on-chain assets, starting with US Treasuries and expanding to equities and ETFs.
The longer version has been building for two years. In September 2024, DTCC and Digital Asset (Canton's original developer) completed a US Treasury collateral pilot connecting investors, banks, clearinghouses, and custodians across fourteen Canton nodes. In 2025, DTCC ran its "Great Collateral Experiment," which demonstrated live on-chain collateral movement — including something US market infrastructure has never really offered: intraday and after-hours financing using tokenized Treasuries, settled 24/7.
Then came the regulatory unlock. On December 11, 2025, the SEC staff issued a no-action letter permitting DTC to run a three-year pilot recording participants' security entitlements on distributed ledger technology rather than exclusively on DTC's centralized ledger. The eligible universe is deliberately liquid and boring (Russell 1000 stocks, ETFs tracking major indices like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100, and US Treasuries) and, for now, tokenized entitlements carry no collateral or settlement value in DTC's risk management calculations. Training wheels, but real ones.
The rollout is now underway: limited production trades began in July 2026, with the full DTCC tokenization service slated for October 2026 and broader industry expansion in the second half of the year. More than 50 firms are involved, including BlackRock, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs. DTCC has already executed live production trades converting DTC-custodied securities into digital tokens. And in a signal of how committed it is to this particular rail, DTCC is co-chairing the Canton Foundation alongside Euroclear, the two largest securities depositories in the world, jointly governing a blockchain network.
Why Canton, and not Ethereum or a private chain?
This is the part most coverage skips, and it's the most interesting.
Public blockchains have a transparency problem that is fatal for institutional finance. On Ethereum, every position, every transfer, every counterparty relationship is visible to anyone. No bank will broadcast its Treasury repo book to the world. Private, permissioned chains solve privacy but recreate the silo problem, a JPMorgan chain and a Goldman chain can't natively transact, so you're back to reconciliation, the very cost blockchain was supposed to eliminate.
Canton splits the difference with an architecture built around one idea: privacy as the default, interoperability as the guarantee. Applications on Canton are written in Daml, a smart-contract language where every contract explicitly defines who can see it and who can change it. Only the parties named on a contract, or granted observer rights, can view it. Coordination across the network happens through the Global Synchronizer, a decentralized ordering service run by known institutions ("supervalidators") under a Linux Foundation-affiliated governance body. Crucially, the synchronizer orders and routes encrypted messages without ever seeing transaction contents.
The result is something like a network of networks: each institution or application keeps sovereign control over its own data and node, yet assets can move atomically across applications. In DTCC's pilots, a tokenized Treasury could be posted as margin to a clearinghouse, financed intraday, and returned across systems run by different firms in a single synchronized transaction. That's the property that matters, and it's the one neither public chains nor isolated private chains have delivered for regulated assets at this scale.
What actually changes: collateral velocity
It's tempting to file "tokenized stocks" under retail novelty. The real prize is duller and much bigger: collateral mobility.
Today, moving a Treasury from one use to another (out of a custody account, through a triparty agent, into a clearinghouse margin account) takes hours and cutoff times measured in business days' worth of friction. Collateral sits idle overnight and on weekends because the plumbing sleeps. In a market where trillions in collateral moves daily, that idle time is a real cost: over-funded margin buffers, intraday credit lines, liquidity stress that concentrates at exactly the wrong moments.
On-chain Treasuries settle in minutes, any hour, any day. DTCC's own experiments have already demonstrated after-hours financing against tokenized USTs, meaning a firm facing a margin call on a Sunday night could, in principle, mobilize collateral instantly rather than waiting for Monday's opening. Extend that logic across cleared derivatives, repo, and securities lending, and you get a structurally more capital-efficient market: fewer buffers, faster recycling, less systemic stickiness in a crisis. That's why the collateral use case, not retail token trading, is where the 50-firm consortium is pointed
The second-order effect is just as important: when the settlement layer runs 24/7, everything built on top of it can too. The neat line between "market hours" and everything else starts to dissolve.
Our take at TrueMarkets
We'd offer three observations.
First, the direction of travel is now settled. For years the tokenization debate was whether regulated US securities would move on-chain. With the SEC's no-action relief, DTCC in production, and the world's two largest depositories co-governing the network, the question has become how fast and who benefits. Infrastructure transitions like this are rare. The last comparable one was dematerialization in the 1970s, which created DTCC in the first place.
Second, the pilot's constraints are the roadmap. Tokenized entitlements don't yet count for collateral value at DTC, and the eligible asset list is narrow. Watch those constraints: each one that falls converts a demonstration into an economic reality. The moment tokenized Treasuries carry full collateral value inside DTC's risk framework, collateral velocity stops being a pilot metric and starts being a P&L line.
Third, the winners will be the firms that treat this as a market-structure change, not an IT project. A 24/7, atomic-settlement world changes how you fund positions, when you face liquidity risk, and what intermediaries you still need. Firms that redesign workflows around instant collateral mobility will hold structurally less idle capital than firms that simply connect a node and carry on. That gap compounds.
The tokenization era of US markets won't arrive with fireworks. It will arrive the way October's launch will: quietly, in the back office, on infrastructure most people never see. Which is exactly how you know it's real.
